NEW DELHI (AP) — Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old American YouTuber, was arrested for trespassing on an off-limits island in the Indian Ocean. He attempted to establish contact with the reclusive Sentinelese tribe on North Sentinel Island, a territory that is heavily restricted to outsiders. Following his unauthorized visit on March 31, 2023, Polyakov was placed in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Port Blair, the capital of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on April 29, 2023, according to police reports.
Polyakov, a resident of Scottsdale, Arizona, undertook this venture despite clear warnings. His actions were part of a misguided adventure where he aimed to interact with the Sentinelese, known for their isolation from modern society for thousands of years. During his brief stay on the island, Polyakov left an offering of a can of Diet Coke and a coconut for the tribe and filmed the location. However, he was unable to make contact with any tribe members, choosing to collect sand samples before retreating to his boat.
A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, expressed concern over Polyakov's actions, stating that while he may have viewed his trip as an adventure, it constituted a violation of Indian laws. Engaging with the Sentinelese poses significant risks not only to the island's inhabitants but also to outsiders, as these individuals could potentially threaten the tribe's existence. Under Indian law, Polyakov faces serious charges that could result in a prison sentence of up to five years and substantial fines.
Legally, visitors are prohibited from approaching within three miles (five kilometers) of North Sentinel Island. This law is essential for the protection of the Sentinelese people, who are known to utilize traditional hunting techniques, employing bows, arrows, and spears against potential threats. Historically, these individuals have shown a deep suspicion towards outsiders. For instance, in 2018, an American missionary was killed after illegally landing on the island, and in 2006, the Sentinelese killed two fishermen who accidentally drifted ashore.
Earlier this week, a representative from the U.S. consulate paid a visit to Polyakov while he remained in custody. The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi emphasized its commitment to assisting American citizens abroad and confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation, though they refrained from releasing any further details due to privacy policies.
According to police, prior to his journey, Polyakov conducted extensive research to understand the sea conditions, tides, and accessibility to North Sentinel Island. His expedition lasted around an hour, during which he used a whistle in an attempt to garner attention from the inhabitants. However, he reported receiving no response. Upon his return, local fishermen spotted him and promptly alerted the authorities, leading to his arrest in Port Blair, located approximately 750 miles (1,207 kilometers) east of mainland India.
